What I Do as a Volunteer in Lviv

When I first came to Lviv, I wanted to do more than simply live here. I wanted to help where I could and be part of the community. My volunteer work has changed over time, but it has always been about finding practical ways to support people and animals in need.

Camouflage Net Making

One of the things I do most often is help make camouflage nets. Across the city there are different workshops, each with its own technique. Some use loose strips of fabric tied onto netting, others weave or knot materials in a tighter pattern. The sizes vary depending on the purpose: from small sections used to make kikimora or ghillie suits, to massive nets large enough to cover tanks or other equipment.

Working on a net can take hours, sometimes days, depending on its size and complexity. It is repetitive, but every knot matters. The finished nets are packed and sent east, where they help protect soldiers, vehicles, and equipment.

Collecting and Sending Supplies

I also spend a lot of time collecting supplies for soldiers and other organisations. This can be anything from warm clothes and medical kits to tools or food. Once gathered, the packages are either sent via Nova Poshta or picked up by drivers heading east. Some of these items come from donations, others I buy with funds collected through small fundraisers. It is a steady, ongoing effort that never really stops. Want to support me? Send me a donation by Paypal! You can find the button at the bottom of the page.

Organising Weekly Dog Walks at Domivka

Domivka Animal Shelter is home to dogs, cats, and rescued wildlife. My main role there is organising a weekly Sunday dog walk for other volunteers. We take the dogs out for fresh air, exercise, and human interaction. For the dogs, it is a break from the shelter environment. For the volunteers, it is a chance to connect and share time with the animals. Want to know more about Domivka? You can find it at their website!

Donating Blood

For over a year now, I have been donating blood every two to three months at the Regional Blood Donation Center on Pekarska Street 65. Blood donations are always in demand, and I often invite others to join me. For many, it is their first time. I guide them through the process and answer questions so they feel comfortable. It is one of the most direct ways to help, and it can make a life-saving difference. Curious how it works? Read my article about it!

Why I Keep Going

Volunteering in Lviv has taught me that consistent, small actions build up over time. A net finished in a basement, a box of supplies loaded into a car, a walk with a shelter dog, or a unit of blood given at the clinic may feel like a small gesture on its own. Together, they form part of a much larger effort to help those who need it most.

If you are in Lviv and want to get involved, there are many ways to do so. You do not need special skills, just a willingness to show up and help.
